Fat Planet - The Obesity Trap and How We Can Escape it by David Lewis; Margaret leitch

$12.00 NZD

Category: Health | Reading Level: very good

Our planet is in the grip of an obesity pandemic. More than a billion people worldwide are overweight and over 600 million are obese. We live in an obesogenic environment in which it is much easier to get fat than to stay fit. How has this come to be? Who is to blame? What can we do? In Fat Planet, Dr D avid Lewis and Dr Margaret Leitch examine the social and psychological causes of the obesity pandemic in order to answer these questions. They use ground-breaking research to highlight the behaviour of corporations that relentlessly promote foods high in sugar, fat and salt, and show that these 'junk' foods have shockingly similar neurological effects to hard drugs. They consider the prevalence of food cues which unconsciously stimulate our desire to consume. And they debunk the myths of fad diets and slimming pills, suggesting practical, easily implemented strategies for sustainable weight loss. The evidence is clear: our problem with obesity must be addressed or we will face catastrophic consequences. It is not too late to change. ...Show more

Medical Medium - Thyroid Healing by Anthony William

$20.00 NZD

Category: Health | Series: Medical Medium | Reading Level: very good

The thyroid is the new hot topic in health. Across age groups, from Baby Boomers (and their parents) to millennials, more and more people--women especially--are hearing that their thyroids are to blame for their fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, memory issues, aches and pains, insomnia, hair loss, hot fl ashes, sensitivity to cold, and more. Everyone wants to know how to free themselves from the thyroid trap.As the thyroid has gotten more and more attention, though, these symptoms haven't gone away--people aren't healing. Labeling someone with "Hashimoto's," "hypothyroidism," or the like doesn't explain the myriad health issues that person may experience. A problematic thyroid is yet one more symptom of something much larger than this one small gland in the neck. It's something much more pervasive in the body, something invasive, that's responsible for the laundry list of symptoms attributed to thyroid disease. In Medical Medium Thyroid Healing, Anthony William, the Medical Medium, reveals an entirely new take on the epidemic of thyroid illness. Empowering readers to become their own thyroid experts, he explains in detail what the source problem really is, including what's going on with inflammation and autoimmune disease, then offers a life-changing toolkit to rescue the thyroid and bring readers back to health and vitality. It's an approach unlike any other, and as his millions of fans and followers will tell you, it's the approach that gets results. Includes photos and recipes. ...Show more

Forever Today - A Memoir of Love and Amnesia by Deborah Wearing

$14.00 NZD

Category: Biography | Reading Level: good-very good

Clive Wearing is one of the most famous, extreme cases of amnesia ever known. In 1985, a virus completely destroyed the memory part of his brain, leaving him trapped in a limbo of the constant present. Since then, every conscious moment for him is as if he has just woken from a ten-year coma, repeated i n an endless loop. A brilliant conductor and BBC music producer, Clive was at the height of his success when the illness struck. For seven years he was kept in the general ward in the London hospital where the ambulance first dropped him off, because there was nowhere else for him to go. His wife Deborah campaigned for better conditions, hopelessly searched for a cure, and, in her quest to find answers, founded a national charity. As damaged as Clive was, the musical part of his brain was unaffected, as was his passionate love for Deborah. Finding there was no way to bring Clive back home, Deborah eventually listened to the friends who counselled her to get away, and she fled to America to start her life again. She initiated a divorce, fell for other men, but found it difficult to forget her love for Clive. Then, miraculously, in their transatlantic phone calls she noticed Clive starting to recover some of his memory, and she was pulled back to England. Today, although he still lives in care, they are closer than ever, and they renewed their marriage vows in 2002. This is the story of an extreme condition that is a reminder of what it is to be human. It is a woman's quest to understand, control, and escape from a nightmare. It is also insight into a bond that runs deeper than conscious thought, a love overcoming the most tragic handicap. ...Show more
