This Accursed Land by Lennard Bickel

$20.00 NZD

Category: Antarctic | Reading Level: very good

This Accursed Land charts the epic journey of Antarctic survival endured by explorer and geologist Sir Douglas Mawson. On the 10th of November, 1912, Douglas Mawson, Lieutenant Belgrave Ninnis and Xavier Mertz set off from the hut at base camp to undertake geographic research, mapping the coastline and collecting geological samples. Three men with their faithful husky's and very basic equipment faced almost insurmountable odds in the world's most desolate climate. Unearthing hitherto unpublished journals, Lennard Bickels's in depth research creates a devastatingly clear image of the great hardships faced by Mawson and his team. Crevasses opened under their feet, blizzards overwhelmed them and, perhaps most dangerously, malnutrition dogged their heels. After the death of his two companions, Mawson's incredible resilience and determination carried him through what to most would have been certain death. In a period of excitement and heroic exploration, Mawson's story was sadly overshadowed by the tragedy of the Scott expedition, meaning that his great achievements were mostly overlooked by the general public in his lifetime. First published in 1977, This Accursed Land is a testament to the courage, strength and sacrifice of Mawson and his team. ...Show more

Antarctica: A Biography by David Day

$20.00 NZD

Category: Antarctic | Reading Level: good-verygood

A groundbreaking history of human interaction with Antarctica, the last continent on earth. For centuries it was suspected that there must be an undiscovered continent in the southern hemisphere. But explorers failed to find one. On his second voyage to the Pacific, Captain James Cook sailed further sou th than any of his rivals but failed to sight land. It was not until 1820 that the continent's frozen coast was finally discovered and parts of the continent began to be claimed by nations that were intent on having it as their own. That rivalry intensified in the 1840s when British, American and French expeditions sailed south to chart further portions of the continent that had come to be called Antarctica. On and off for nearly two centuries, the race to claim exclusive possession of Antarctica has gripped the imagination of the world. Science was enlisted to buttress the rival claims as nations developed new ways of asserting territorial claims over land that was too forbidding to occupy. Although the Antarctic Treaty of 1959 was meant to end the rivalry, it has continued regardless, as new nations became involved and environmentalists, scientists and resource companies began to compete for control. Antarctica: A biography draws upon libraries and archives from around the world to provide the first, large-scale history of Antarctica. On one level, it is the story of explorers battling the elements in the most hostile place on earth as they strive for personal triumph, commercial gain and national glory. On a deeper level, it is the story of nations seeking to incorporate the Antarctic into their national narratives and to claim its frozen wastes as their own. ...Show more

Scott of the Antarctic: The Definitive Biography by David Crane

$14.00 NZD

Category: Antarctic | Reading Level: very good

David Crane has given us a magisterial portrait of one of Britain's greatest heroes and explorers, acclaimed as the 'masterpiece' on the subject. Reissued for the 100th anniversary of Scott's doomed expedition. 'It seems a pity, but I do not think I can write more! For God's sake look after our people.' These were the final words written in Scott's diary on 29 March 1912, as he lay dying of exhaustion, starvation and extreme cold, in his tent on his return journey from the South Pole. Since then he has been the subject of many books. Yet in all the pages that have been written about him, the personality behind the legend has been forgotten or distorted beyond all recognition. David Crane's magisterial biography redresses this completely. By reassessing Scott's life and his substantial scientific achievements, Crane is able to provide a fresh and exciting perspective on both the Discovery expedition of 1901-4 and the Terra Nova expedition of 1910-12. The courage and tragedy of Scott's last journey are only one part of the process, for the scientific enquiry that led up to it transformed the whole nature and ambition of Antarctic exploration. Written with the full support of Scott's surviving relatives, and with access to the voluminous diaries and records of key participants, this definitive biography sets out to reconcile the very private struggles of the man with the very public life of extremes that he led. ...Show more
