Taking a comprehensive set of climate, landform and soil variables chosen for their roles in driving geographic variation in biological patterns and comparing them across thousands of geographical points around New Zealand, Landcare Research has been able to develop a mapping technique which identifies our key land environmental types, from coastal dune systems to broad-leaf podocarp forest and alpine environments, and what will grow there.
